suicideTALK: An exploration in suicide awareness

suicideTALK is a 1.5- to 2-hour exploration in suicide awareness. Organized around the question, "Should we talk about suicide?" it provides a structure in which session members can safely explore some of the most challenging attitudinal issues about suicide, and encourages every member to find a part that they can play in preventing suicide.

suicideTALK should only be presented by those who have received intervention skills training through a program like ASIST or its equivalent. Those who present suicideTALK are known as session leaders.

suicideTALK Session Leader Competencies

A willing sesson leader:

• appreciates that curiosity is the key to becoming suicide aware.
• recognizes that suicideTALK unfolds the exploration of suicide in ways that leads to greater comfort and curiosity.
• appreciates that the presentation of an awareness session must model open and direct talk about suicide.

A ready session leader:

• regards positive feedback as essential to the creating comfort.
• is confident that suicideTALK will help session members become more aware of suicide and more likely to want to help in some way.
• understands that suicideTALK session leader materials are not transferable and that this intellectual property must be protected.

An able session leader:

• balances safety and challenge during the session.
• encourages open discussion of suicideTALK’s exploration questions.
• is committed to conducting suicideTALK in a manner that is, in all significant respects, consistent with the suicideTALK Session Leader Manual and with their learning experience at the suicideTALK Training for Sesson Leaders.
• pursues ongoing learning and engages in self-reflection to improve the suicideTALK sessions they conduct.
• speaks well of suicideTALK, safeTALK and ASIST and supports opportunities for more suicideTALK sessions, safeTALK trainings and ASIST workshops to be conducted.

The edition 3.0 kit is provided on a CD-ROM containing the session leader manual, handouts and forms, in addition to bonus customizations of the slides for First Nations, US Army, youth and mature groups. All slide sets can be easily customized.	The edition 2.2 kit is packaged in a durable poly binder containing the session leader manual, handouts, forms and overhead projector slides in print format. Also included is a CD-ROM containing the slides in PowerPoint format.
