Your
safeTALK trainer provided you with his/her name and/or his/her trainer number.
You should be able to find his/her name or number in this
listing (248Kb PDF). This indicates that your trainer has completed
a standardized training, meets or intends to meet LivingWorks’ requirement
to present a minimum number of safeTALKs per year and reports on their trainings.
Listing also means that the trainer has access to ongoing support.
- Your safeTALK should have taken place over a minimum of two-and-one-half
hours. There should have been between 10 and 30 participants, although a
minimum of 15 is much preferred. A community support resource will almost
always be in attendance and identified to you early in the training.
- You should have been informed about local suicide intervention resources
and their availability in your community should have been discussed.
- You should have seen two versions of six video scenes designed to show
the difference between a non-alert and an alert helper.
- You should have received
a safeTALK Resource Kit (see image at right), including a resource
book, wallet card, sticker and certificate.
- You should have the sense that your trainer was prepared and that he/she encouraged
participation and took all participant contributions seriously.
- If you were not told, you should know that the small financial return to
LivingWorks for this training is mostly used to offset the initial and ongoing
development costs of safeTALK amortized over ten years and to cover the costs
of supporting your trainer and maintaining quality. All of those costs
were paid and financed by LivingWorks. There are no subsidies, government
grants or tax benefits.
If you have questions about any of these matters, please take them up with
your safeTALK trainer. There are sometimes quite good reasons for exceptions.
If you cannot contact your trainer, send your concerns to us and we will pass
them on to your trainer.
