October 29, 2003, Val Horner was the recipient of one of two 2003 Manitoba
Quality Champion Awards, at the Manitoba Quality Network Gala Dinner. The event
was held
at the Fairmont Hotel with approximately 150 guests from businesses and government
departments across Manitoba attending.
Q-Nets Quality Principles & Criteria state, “The Quality Principles form the foundation for long term quality improvement. These Principles include cooperation, teamwork, leadership through involvement and by example, focus on customers, respect for individuals, contribution from all individuals, process orientation, continuous improvement, fact based decision making and concern for stakeholders and society.” These are the criteria used in selection of the Quality Champion.
Val’s contribution to quality improvement in Manitoba Corrections and her expertise in the following areas were recognized: leadership, nursing, counseling, suicide intervention, education and training, and coaching and mentoring others. Her accomplishments, such as recognition by LivingWorks and other Correctional Jurisdictions as a coaching trainer and consultant in the area of suicide, both within the Department of Justice, but also in the community locally and internationally were highlighted. Partnerships with the Winnipeg City Police, RCMP, and Red River College fostered by Val were an example of her focus on cooperation, teamwork and a concern for stakeholders and society. Her ability to model the organizations core values, to support others’ efforts and to strive to further Corrections’ vision was acknowledged.
