safeTALK Training for Trainers (T4T)

safeTALK Trainer Competencies

A willing trainer:

  • recognizes that motivation is the key to learning suicide alertness skills.
  • recognizes that safeTALK unfolds wisdom about alertness in ways that lead to deeper understanding and better integration.
  • recognizes that the teaching of alertness skills should model key elements in helping a person with thoughts of suicide, such as open and direct talk about suicide.
A ready trainer:
  • values all forms of feedback but regards positive feedback as essential to the safeTALK learning process.
  • is confident that safeTALK will help participants become effective suicide alert helpers.
An able trainer:
  • balances safety and challenge during the training.
  • is committed to conducting safeTALK in a manner that is, in all significant respects, consistent with the safeTALK Trainer Manual and with their learning experience at the safeTALK Training for Trainers.
  • pursues ongoing learning and engages in self-reflection to improve the safeTALK trainings they conduct.
  • speaks well of safeTALK and ASIST and supports opportunities for more safeTALK trainings and ASIST workshops to be conducted.

Interested in becoming a safeTALK trainer? Important:

safeTALK T4Ts are open to persons who meet the following eligibility requirements*. You must:

  • have read Essential Information for safeTALK Trainer Candidates;
  • have completed a two-day ASIST workshop;
  • have access to high speed internet and a computer that can play DVDs;
  • commit to complete several hours of guided pre-session study;
  • be a skilled presenter;
  • have good group facilitation skills;
  • be committed to promoting suicide safety through open and direct talk about suicide;
  • be proficient in PowerPoint (only if choosing to add the customizable option of the training presentation to the trainer kit); and
  • complete and submit a safeTALK T4T Application. (Applications must be signed by a manager where applicable. See application form or call or email the contact listed for a particular T4T for deadline information.)

OPEN = course is open to the public and spots are still available
CONTRACT = spots are available, however the course is private and only members of the organization may apply
FULL = no spots are available, however you can request to be put on the waiting list; course may or may not be private
