Leading researcher Dr. Peter Gutierrez joins LivingWorks in mission of preventing suicide

May 19, 2020

LivingWorks, the world’s leading developer of suicide prevention training programs, is pleased to announce that Dr. Peter Gutierrez will be joining our team in the role of Suicidologist: Research and Evaluation. Dr. Gutierrez has an eminent background in the suicide prevention field with research interests including veterans, military, psychometrics, and treatment efficacy. His insights and expertise will help take LivingWorks’ training programs to a higher level as we move forward in our mission of saving lives from suicide.

Dr. Gutierrez’s most recent work is with the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) in Denver, where he has been serving as a Clinical/Research Psychologist. He co-directs the Military Suicide Research Consortium (MSRC), implementing a multidisciplinary research approach to suicide prevention for the U.S. Department of Defense, and will initially divide his time between LivingWorks and continuing involvement with the MSRC.

“We are honored to have Dr. Gutierrez joining our Innovation team,” said Rick Trimp, President of LivingWorks. “Our commitment to evidence-based programs is instrumental in our approach to saving lives. With Dr. Gutierrez’s expertise and insight, we will take that approach to the next level—significantly increasing our impact and advancing our vision of a world free from suicide loss.”

Dr. Gutierrez’s work with LivingWorks will include elevating the quality and efficacy of well-known programs including LivingWorks ASIST, LivingWorks safeTALK, and LivingWorks Start. He will also research and analyze the factors that have led to highly successful training implementations so that LivingWorks can readily replicate these best practices elsewhere. For example, Hurlburt Field, an Air Force base in Florida, attained an 80% reduction in suicide rates through concerted use of LivingWorks training. By studying cases such as Hurlburt, Dr. Gutierrez will enable us to drive similar results across the board as we accelerate our work with both military and civilian communities.

“I am thrilled to be joining LivingWorks and becoming part of the team moving efforts at evidence-based suicide prevention forward in multiple ways,” said Dr. Gutierrez. “After 20+ years of designing and conducting research across a broad range of topics in suicidology, I look forward to the exciting challenges ahead to help LivingWorks advance their vision and mission.”

We look forward to all that we will be able to accomplish with Dr. Gutierrez. The need for effective suicide prevention skills is greater than ever, and his expertise will help us reach many more communities and organizations with quality, skills-based training to save lives.
