Vision, Mission, Values

Our Vision—Living Works: A life-affirming, suicide-safer world.

Our Mission—Saving lives through the creation, development, and delivery of innovative training experiences that empower organizations, communities, and individuals to be safer from suicide.

At LivingWorks, we believe that suicide is preventable and everyone has a role to play. Some participants in our workshops are highly trained mental health professionals, while others have no previous experience. All of them learn the skills to save a life.

Saving lives from suicide is possible because most people with thoughts of suicide don’t want to die—what they want is to escape from the pain in their lives. We know that most people thinking about suicide would choose life and try to work through their difficulties if only they could get help from someone with the right knowledge and skills.

Teaching these skills to as many people as possible means we can help the world become safer from suicide, one intervention at a time.

As a social enterprise, our primary mission is saving lives. We collaborate with public and private organizations to empower communities with life-saving skills. We provide support by training local trainers, ensuring an international standard of excellence, helping to develop effective strategies, and offering resources and workshop materials. Sustainability is a core element of our approach: we provide dependable, long-term assistance that helps communities build suicide-safety skills for many years to come.

Designed and guided by an expert leadership team with knowledge in education, nursing, psychology, social work, and spiritual perspectives, our programs represent the world standard in suicide intervention training and include customizable elements that can be tailored to each community’s needs. All LivingWorks programs undergo extensive design and development, as well as regular updates to reflect the latest evidence and best practice knowledge about suicide prevention.

Behind every life, there’s a story to tell. The vast majority of participants describe our training as among the best they’ve attended, and many claim it’s changed their lives—both personally and professionally. Many participants carry out helpful interventions, sometimes immediately after training.

The partnership that was to become LivingWorks began in Calgary, Alberta, in 1983. The ensuing years have brought our vision and training programs to places and organizations across the globe. We continue to look to our history and founders for inspiration as we strive to help people build suicide-safer communities.
